Do decimals make you and your students nervous? Did anyone ever really understand what we were doing when we learned to divide fractions as kids? It seems like everything changes when we move past adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing with whole numbers.
Terms like “decimal fractions” and “fractions greater than one” permeate new standards documents and curricula. But what do these phrases mean? And how do we help students understand them?
This workshop will help teachers improve their own understandings of mathematical concepts and the pedagogies they use to teach fractions, decimals, and percents. Participants will:
– Help students see similarities between numbers like 247 and 2.47.
– Explore games that help students visualize and understand addition, subtraction, multiplication and even division of fractions.
– Identify real-world connections to content that is most often taught procedurally.
